Frequently asked questions
Q. What if we decide not to go through with the adoption? Are our expenses covered?
A. No, coverage only applies if the birth parents change their minds.

Q. Why is there no coverage for any costs or expenses incurred in the first 30 days of the policy?
A. This "waiting period" was established to reduce fraudulent claims so this coverage could remain affordable for legitimate adopting parents.

Q. What if we live in a state that qualifies for the AdoptionAssurance Program but decide to adopt a child in another state?
A. As long as the policy is purchased by a resident of a state in which AdoptionAssurance is offered, an adoption can be finalized anywhere in the United States. No international adoptions are allowed in this program.

Q. We want to adopt a child over the age of two; will your policy provide coverage?
A. No, only infants under the age of two are eligible for the program at this time.

Q. How do we find an approved attorney?
A. Adoption attorneys that are members of the following organizations are automatically approved for the program:
  • American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA)
  • Academy of California Adoption Lawyers (ACAL)
Adoption attorneys that are not members of these two organizations must be approved by Tangram Program Managers. The approved attorney list is found in our Approved Attorney List section of this web site.

Q. What if we are using an adoption agency instead of an attorney?
A. Adoption agencies are acceptable as long as the agency has been approved prior to purchasing the policy. The approved adoption agency list is found in our Approved Adoption Agency List section of this web site.

Q. What are typical expenses covered by this policy?
A. Typical expenses covered are maternity related expenses such as doctor visits, maternity clothing, groceries, housing, and transportation. The policy also pays for the cost of a social service agency evaluation of the adopting parents' home, the birth mother’s legal expenses up to $1,000 and counseling fees rendered directly to the birth mother. In addition, the policy will pay up to $500 for advertising expenses associated with your search for a birth mother.

Q. What insurance company is behind this policy?
The AdoptionAssurance insurance product is backed and underwritten by a carrier of the Markel North America Insurance Group of companies. Markel North America is a property and casualty carrier based in Richmond, Virginia, and provides commercial specialty insurance programs for a variety of niche markets.

An insurance company’s financial stability and strength are important factors to consider before purchasing insurance. Because an insurance premium paid today purchases coverage for claims that might occur many years in the future, the financial stability of the insurer is of critical concern. Various independent rating agencies provide information and assign ratings to assist buyers in their search for financially sound insurers

Here is how Markel North America Insurance Group rates:
  • A.M. Best Rating: A (Excellent)
  • A.M. Best Financial Size Category "XII" = $1 billion to $1.250 billion of reported capital, surplus and conditional reserve funds.
  • Duff & Phelps Rating: A (High)
